Tyanna Buie

Tyanna Buie, who is represented by the Alice Wilds art gallery, is a Chicago and Milwaukee native. A self-described dedicated studio artist, Buie is known for her exploration of images, fragmentation, appropriation, and identity. Born as the youngest of four siblings on Chicago’s south side, she experienced life in the foster care system before finding solace and expression through her art. Buie went on to earn her BA from Western Illinois University and her MFA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Her work, heavily influenced by personal experiences and significant black cultural moments, often incorporates traditional and non-traditional printmaking processes, as well as video work utilizing Deep-Fake technology. Since a young age, creating works of art has been a positive outlet for Tyanna’s life. She claims that art has not only been a form of personal catharsis and introspection but has also been a conduit for creating healing conversations within her own family unit and creating new connections with people of similar experiences. Though Tyanna utilizes a wide range of mediums, most of her work pays definite homage to the history of photography as she distorts and recreates family polaroids through reduction and collaging techniques. Buie’s commitment to community engagement is evident through her participation in Healthy Neighborhood Initiatives and hosting printmaking workshops. She has received numerous accolades, including the prestigious Joan Mitchell Painters & Sculptors Grant in 2015 and the 2019 Kresge Artist Fellowship in the Visual Arts. Her extensive exhibition record includes solo and group shows nationally, with her work acquired by major institutions and private collections. Buie has also contributed to various artists-in-residency programs and served as an educator, previously holding positions at the College for Creative Studies in Detroit and currently as an Associate Professor in Printmaking at the Rhode Island School of Design.
